This nightmare was born out of the need to feel safe in game and saving before you move on to a hard part of the game. You feel its alright if you die because you just saved after all and that handy save point has your back. However, what you'd find is the betrayal of the save file never having actually finished saving for what ever reason launching you into an endless void.
