Louis has always understood that his existence is ultimately meaningless. A kingdom within a larger kingdom, all stemming from the Nightmare tree? There was no real need for him in a world full of princes. He rules ghosts and a realm built of ashes, its inhabitants long withered away by Louis' "glorious" brilliance. All he has left is his vanity and the memories of his failures. Well, not all of the failures are his. The very essence of his existence, the nightmares that bore him and those that continue to shape him, they are filled with the reminders of vanity, greed, and failure. 

It is for this reason, and this deep understanding of his uselessness, that Louis became so vain. His beauty is the only thing valuable about him, really, and even then he's met stygians far prettier than he. For a while, Lian was the light of his life, but for some reason she locked herself away. It's been centuries since he and Fen last saw her face. But Louis knows that he is the Rakan to Lian's Xayah, even if she chooses never to see him again. And even if she stops loving him, she'll always be in his heart. 

Vain as Louis is, he's surprisingly perceptive about other peoples' emotions. It doesn't stop him from making bad choices though.
