Schwarz is one of two Stygian that were created when an ancient Stygian crumbled and fragmented through time and obscurity. Originally reduced to scattered fragments across the Nightmare Realm, his other half's efforts have enabled him to take an independent Stygian form. When Weiss ascended as the Child of Blades, his new duties often separated them, which made Schwarz extremely unhappy. He left on a journey to pursue his own ascension so that he can become his beloved's equal once more. Eventually, he earned the Nightmare Tree's acknowledgement and became the Child of Flow.

A coy and unperturbed person, he prefers to observe instead of taking on an active role. Unlike Weiss, his main goals in life is to amuse himself, though what exactly he considers amusing is a secret to all, even his soulmate does not quite know. He follows his own whims and interests, often dragging Weiss along in his pursuit of entertainment. While he doesn't mind meeting new people, he tries to keep his distance from them and avoids getting tangled up in other Kingdoms' politics.

All things must come to an end - this best describes his branch and its influence upon others. Whether it is the cold touch of death, the consequences of someone's actions, or the subtle river of time itself - all things flow inexorably towards the abyss. He guides dreamers through their final sleep, seekers through their meandering journeys, and other Stygians into pitfalls of their own making. He's not innately malicious, but he does enjoy enabling other people's impulsive decisions and watching them deal with the consequences.

Usually, he appears in his Betta form or human avatar form. As a Cursed Legendary, he keeps his true power hidden, so that he remains as an unassuming presence in others' minds.
